Women often experience changes in their libido and sexual performance as they age. While men experience these issues too (commonly referred to as erectile dysfunction) the changes that women go through, such as sexual dysfunction, are often more subtle and harder to identify as a hormonal or physical issue.
Sexual dysfunction can start as a woman reaches menopause (typically around the age of 50) or much earlier or later. Each woman has their own physical makeup, and their bodies will process and reflect changes differently. These are a few common symptoms that you may experience:
- Low libido or sexual desire levels
- High sexual desire levels but low physical arousal ability
- Problems reaching orgasm
- Pain or discomfort associated with sexual contact
You may experience just one of these problems or multiple problems at once. Other causes may be due to physical problems, hormonal imbalances, or from mental stress. Understanding the source of female sexual dysfunction is the first step toward developing a treatment plan.
