Many say that the city of Largo is named after one of the larger lakes in the area. But if you talk to others they will tell you that Largo was name by Scottish settlers after a city names Largo in Scotland. Either way, the debate continues to be a source of fodder for good conversation.
What Largo has been known for throughout the U.S. was that it was epicenter of the citrus industry. Before the 20th century, Largo was shipping a lot of citrus to the Northern states. Thereby, earning it’s well deserved nickname of Citrus City. Largo prospered for quite some time until it was dealt an unexpected blow by some freezes. Largo’s population continued to boom and the city grew to what it is today.
Largo is also the place where the Pinellas Trail had its first section built. It connected Taylor Park in Largo to Seminole Park in Seminole. From that small 5 mile section the Pinellas Trail has blossomed into a 34-mile long trail that thousands use for biking, jogging, and walking.
